Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by huge industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety measures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post should not be blocked and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow objects like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
